Yaku-Sugi
The“Yaku-Sugi”
fountain pen is hand crafted from the very
special wood of the Yaku-Sugi tree.
The famous
“Yaku-Sugi” trees are found on the small
island of Yakushima located at the South of
Kyoshu – Island -Japan. This Island was
registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site
in 1993. The ‘Yaku-Sugi’ tree known as
‘Cryptomeria Japonica’ has grown naturally
for well over 1,000 years on the Island of
Yakushima. The oldest of these ‘Yaku-sugi’
trees surviving to this day are protected
and are called by individual nicknames such
as “Johmon-sugi”.
In certain
‘Yaku-Sugi’ trees growing at an elevation of
1,000 meters in extreme weather conditions
are found small struma (swellings) called
“Awa-Kobu”” - the wood grain has an
appearance like small bubbles. These
“Awa-Kobu” are very highly treasured and are
often called ‘the diamond of the ‘Yaku-Sugi’
tree’. These Awa-Kobu can be clearly seen in
the wood grain on this writing instrument.
This pen is
fitted with the Sailor ‘Naginata-Togi’ nib.
